Health Benefits Provided By Grape Juice

September 10, 2009 – 12:28 am

grape juiceUnfermented grape juice from red grapes contain the same beneficial compounds. This fact explained by R. Curtis Ellison, doctor and professor of medicine and public health at Boston University Medical School.
He said, “Grapes, especially Concord red grapes, have many of the polyphenols present in red wine. Some studies have shown that large amounts of red grape juice decrease the stickiness of platelets [in the blood], which would lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. The effects of grape juice, however, are much less than those of red wine, as fermentation increases the beneficial effects. Further, much of the protection against heart disease from moderate drinking come from the alcohol itself. So, grape juice is good for you, but wine is better.”

Improve Sexuality With Red Wine

August 13, 2009 – 2:47 pm

wine and sexLight to moderate consumption of red wine may lead to improved sexual function in women, according to a study in the October issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Women who drank one or two glasses of red wine a day scored higher on a questionnaire focused on sexual health and enjoyment. According to the study’s authors, members of the departments of Urology and Public Health at the University of Florence, the results help give a clearer picture on the female sexual response cycle.

In the medical industry, most studies on sexual health tend to focus on factors that cause dysfunction. For example, a recent study on erectile dysfunction found that moderate levels of alcohol consumption lead to a 30 percent lower chance of impotence.

“Historically, the aspects of wine and sexuality have been well known since the time of Ancient Greece,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Nicola Mondaini, who is publishing a book on the subject next month, titled Vino e Eros. “But the field of female sexual dysfunction is still highly unexplored.” Read the rest of this entry »

Wine Reducing Radiation Therapy Side Effects

July 24, 2009 – 9:22 am

wine therapyA clinical study by an Italian oncology center has found that women who drink wine while undergoing radiation treatment see fewer side effects than women who don’t drink.

The Radiotherapy and Palliative Care Unit, along with the research department at the Catholic University of Campobasso, in southern Italy’s Molise region, examined the extent of tissue damage on 348 women who were being treated for breast cancer. The findings are slated for publication in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology.

Radiation therapy for cancer involves bombarding afflicted areas with radiation to kill cancerous cells. A medication regiment to protect against extensive radioactive tissue damage accompanies this process. But often, the study text states, “these agents have several drawbacks, in that they are very expensive, they have sometimes severe side effects, and they have the potential to protect tumor cells as well as healthy cells from the effects of radiation.” While antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E offer some protection against tissue damage in animal studies, “a diet that is radio-protective in humans has yet to be identified.”
